Fire Safety Tips
Essential fire safety information for all residents
Know Your Exits
Identify all exits in your unit and building. Plan two escape routes from every room and practice them with your family.
Direct Firefighters to Shutoffs
When firefighters arrive, immediately tell them the location of the gas and electrical shutoffs for your building. This is critical for their safety and yours.
Test Smoke Detectors
Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors monthly. Replace batteries at least once a year, or when the low-battery alert sounds.
Fire Extinguishers
Keep a fire extinguisher in your kitchen and know how to use it. Remember the PASS method: Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep.
Don't Block Common Areas
Keep hallways, stairwells, and entryways clear of personal items. Blocked exits are a serious fire hazard in multi-unit buildings.
Call 911 First
Always call 911 before attempting to fight a fire. Get everyone out of the building, then call from a safe location.
